One of the major costs of college attendance is housing. Some schools require you to live on campus in university owned housing while others allow you the choice of living on campus or off campus. If you have a choice, is it more affordable to live on campus or off campus? As you might expect, the answer is, it depends upon the college you choose, where it is located, and your choice of accommodations.
Many feel that living on campus is easier when you consider you can leave your room and walk to class without the hassle of transportation and parking. Likewise, you are not paying monthly rent payments or utility bills. While most residence halls have smaller shared rooms than apartments, there are usually more common areas, activities, and available staff to help you with any issues.
Off campus living is potentially cheaper particularly with one or more roommates sharing the same apartment. You most likely will have more space and even amenities, but often the more amenities, the higher the price. Off campus landlords will often require a guarantor (usually a parent or family friend) who will co-sign the lease promising to pay the rent if you cannot. Leases can also be for twelve months and require first and last rental payments and security deposits. Make sure that wherever you choose to live, you are comfortable with your choice and the price you have paid to live there
